To check if your SMB shares are visible and accessible on your Windows network, you need to verify your network discovery settings and perform a few checks using built-in tools. This guide will walk you through the necessary steps to ensure your SMB shares can be accessed by other devices on your network.

Check Network Discovery Settings

First, ensure that network discovery is enabled on your Windows system, as this allows other devices on the network to see your shared folders.

  • Open the Settings app by pressing Windows + I.
  • Navigate to Network & Internet.
  • Click on Status in the left-hand menu.
  • Scroll down and click on Network and Sharing Center.
  • In the new window, select Change advanced sharing settings on the left.
  • Under your current network profile (Private or Public), ensure that Turn on network discovery is selected.
  • Also check Turn on file and printer sharing.
  • Click Save changes if you made any adjustments.

Use Command Prompt to Check SMB Shares

Next, you can use the Command Prompt to check the SMB shares available on your machine. This method provides a quick way to see what folders are shared.

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
  3. In the Command Prompt window, enter the following command:
net share
  1. Press Enter. This will list all the shared folders on your system along with their paths and resource names.

List Shared Folders with PowerShell

PowerShell offers a more powerful way to manage your SMB shares. You can use it to list all shared folders easily.

  1. Press Windows + X and select Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  2. In the PowerShell window, type the following command to list the SMB shares:
Get-SmbShare
  1. Press Enter. This command will display a list of all SMB shares along with their descriptions and paths.

Test Visibility from Another Device

To confirm that your SMB shares are accessible from other devices on your network, follow these steps:

  1. On another device connected to the same network, open File Explorer.
  2. In the address bar, type the following, replacing ComputerName with the actual name of your computer:
\ComputerName
  1. Press Enter. If your SMB shares are visible, you should see the shared folders listed here.

Troubleshoot Visibility Issues

If your SMB shares are not visible, there might be several common issues to check:

  • Ensure that network discovery and file sharing are turned on (as covered earlier).
  • Check the firewall settings to make sure that SMB traffic is not being blocked. You may need to allow specific exceptions for SMB in your firewall settings.
  • Verify that the SMB feature is enabled in Windows. To do this, go to Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off and ensure that SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is checked, if applicable.
  • Restart your computer and the device you're trying to connect from to refresh the network settings.
